Attorney-General Nicole Roxon, who is also the Minister for Emergency Management, announced the payments on Sunday, as it was confirmed that Prime Minister Julia Gillard would visit bushfire-affected areas in Tasmania tomorrow.

People living in the local government areas affected will be able to claim up a $1000 per adult and $400 per child

It will apply to three local government areas, with assessments underway in two others.

Those eligible can claim up to $1000 per adult and $400 per child. Other emergency assistance will be available for people needing food and temporary accommodation.

Ms Roxon said the Tasmanian fires were a sobering reminder to others across the country to plan carefully for hot conditions, which are expected in NSW, Victoria and South Australia over the next few days.

"Look at the forecasts if you are travelling, talk with your family and neighbours, make sure you activate your bushfire plan now. We want to make sure people are kept as safe as possible," she said.

Ms Roxon also urged people to check on elderly neighbours and family members to ensure they were well hydrated and in good health during hot weather.

The disaster relief payments will be available from noon today. Applications can be made through Centrelink, online, by phone or in person.

The Commonwealth would also work closely with the Tasmanian government to help rebuild the state and limit the economic impact of the fires, Ms Roxon said.
