As a child my parents used to take me and my six siblings camping at Nambucca Heads during the summer holidays.
We had an old khaki army tent that we slept in, on air mattresses.
I remember early in the mornings my brothers would roll me off the mattress to take it down to the water to use as a surf mat and in the evenings we’d go sand crab hunting with all the other children at the caravan park.
Summer was always a time of freedom and outdoors.
We would go exploring, bushwalking, bike riding and lots of swimming. It was a lot of fun but also a time of being sunburnt.
My skin is so fair that I’d burn easily. So each summer I’d go red, blister and peel many times over.
My favourite holiday as an adult was in Samoa. The beaches are white, the water is blue, the weather is great and the people are very friendly.
Generally speaking Samoan people are not wealthy but they have a happiness and contentment that I envy.
From them I’ve learned that you don’t need possessions to make you happy, that happiness is something that comes from within.
I love travel and in the future I’d like to go on a road trip across America. I really enjoy meeting people and seeing interesting places.
I also love history and would like the chance to visit some European cities. I’m fascinated by old buildings and really like getting to know and understand the history of an area.
Most of all I love returning home after a holiday because I know it’s then that I can take time to really appreciate what we have here in Australia.
