Community celebrates aviator's success

They didn't quite get the 1000 spectators they had hoped for, but organisers of celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of Sir Charles Kingsford-Smith's flight from Gerroa to New Zealand said they still were thrilled at the level of community interest in the event.

About 250 people gathered at Gerroa's Black Head Reserve on Saturday for an official ceremony at 11.30am that featured a vintage plane fly-over.

Gerringong District Historical Society member Ruth Walker said organisers were pleased with the turnout, which she said included people who had been on Seven Mile Beach to witness Sir Kingsford-Smith take off in 1933.
