Simple-style fisher falls foul of fire ban

A Seven Hills man who tried to live the simple life on a Kiama beach copped a $1100 fine at the weekend after falling foul of a statewide total fire ban.

Police say the 28-year-old man planned to cook freshly caught fish over a fire he had set up a near the water at Bombo Beach Saturday.

Patrolling police officers spotted the fire about 8.20pm; it was also reported by onlookers.

When approached, the man said he thought the fire ban had ended the night before.

He was issued a fine for failing to obey minister’s direction.

There are currently no total fire bans in NSW.

The current fire danger rating in the Illawarra and much of NSW is high - four categories lower than the catastrophic conditions experienced in region on Tuesday.
