It is alleged several 14-year-old boys lit an incendiary device in grassland on Chapman Place about 9pm last night.
A grass fire took hold, which threatened a nearby property that was under construction.
The boys attempted to extinguish the fire without success.
One of the teens then enlisted the help of his father who sustained minor burns to his feet as he tried to put out the blaze.
Fire and Rescue NSW attended and extinguished the fire.
Detectives from Lake Illawarra Local Area Command are continuing inquiries into the incident.
