Swimmer taken to hospital with neck injury

A man was taken to Wollongong Hospital on Sunday after being dumped headfirst into a sandbar at North Wollongong Beach.

Just after 3pm the 23-year-old man from the Sydney suburb of Ryde left the water and walked to a lifesaver.

He complained of neck pain after being dumped by a wave into a sandbar.

As a precautionary measure, the lifesavers on duty immediately put a neck brace on the man and laid him onto a spinal board before calling an ambulance.

Lifesavers and the man’s friend stayed with him until the ambulance arrived.

The lifesavers helped carry the man, who was conscious and calm, up the beach to the waiting ambulance.

He was transported to Wollongong Hospital with suspected spinal injuries.
