Dozens of Macedonian Orthodox Church parishioners gathered at Belmore Basin on Saturday for their annual cross-throwing ceremony.
In a ritual designed to celebrate the baptism of Jesus, Very Reverend Alexandar Ivanovski threw the holy cross into the harbour as several young men swam to be the first to retrieve it.
Daniel Stojanovski, of Berkeley, took out this year's honour and, according to tradition, can look forward to good luck for the rest of the year.
