The crowd at the Botanic Gardens Sunset Cinema cheered so loudly that the groom-to-be, Geoff Wilson, at first couldn't hear the response from his girlfriend of two years, Eliza King.
Mr Wilson arranged for a special slide show to play on the big screen in the lead-up to the screening of the night's screening of US comedy Pitch Perfect.
"Once upon a time there lived a girl with sparkling green eyes and golden blonde hair," began the slide show, which incorporated photos of Ms King.
"Eliza was her name. Everyone in all the land agreed that Eliza was truly beautiful, but there was one man in particular called Geoff who loved her very, very deeply.
"So on Saturday 19th of January Geoff took Eliza to Sunset Cinema to ask her something very important. Eliza, will you marry me?"
Mr Wilson watched Ms King reading the message and grew nervous as she was "not giving anything away".
"She looked surprised, shocked, and really happy, embarrassed. I said 'So that's a yes?' She said 'That's a yes'," he said.
The pair, from Forresters Beach and Gosford on the Central Coast, plan to marry in January next year.
Ms King, who has worked as a professional singer for many years, was moved to tears.
"I think with me being an entertainer all my life he thought he'd have to do something big. I couldn't have imagined it any better," she said.
