Wollongong Town Hall trees get the chop

Trees causing damage to the foundations of Wollongong Town Hall will be removed next month.

Wollongong City Council will remove four 40-year-old plane trees on Kembla Street, between Crown and Burelli streets, on February 3.

The roots have begun cracking the foundations of the heritage-listed building, lifting the pavement and damaging underground services.

The trees will be replaced by four Illawarra flame trees.

The council will also remove a plane tree in Burelli Street outside Wollongong City Gallery and two cocos palms on Crown Street in front of the town hall because they affect the view of drivers and pedestrians.
