Home chemical alert after toddlers burned

Parents have been reminded to be vigilant with household cleaning products after two toddlers were taken to hospital in Sydney with severe burns after exposure to alkali drain cleaner.

The toddlers, aged 3 and 18 months, suffered full thickness burns and required surgery and skin grafting.

"I urge parents and carers to buy only those chemical products sold in child-proof containers and to keep them well out of the reach of children at all times," the head of the burns unit at Westmead Children's Hospital, Dr John Harvey, said.

If an injury occurs, clothing should be completely removed, including nappy, to ensure all remaining chemical is removed and the area should be irrigated with cold running water into a drained container for 20 minutes.
