Giant hopper cements place at Port Kembla

This super-large cement hopper caught the eye as it was unloaded at Port Kembla yesterday.

One of three hoppers on a shipment from Spain, the structures will be used in Cement Australia's $180 million cement-grinding mill at Port Kembla, under construction on reclaimed land near No 6 jetty.

Once complete, the mill will be Australia's largest single cement-grinding mill, producing 800,000 tonnes of cement and 300,000 tonnes of blast-furnace slag - a concrete additive - each year.

Cement Australia will be the first tenant to move into Port Kembla's outer harbour development.

Anthony Willebrands from Illawarra Stevedores said yesterday's shipment was the first oversized cargo received for the mill, with another four due from Spain in coming months.
