GALLERY: Australia Day to be a stormy affair

Australia Day usually equals fun in the sun. But Illawarra revellers are urged to start their celebrations early tomorrow with afternoon thunderstorms forecast to hit the region.

Morning will be the perfect time to hit the beach with the temperature expected to reach 25 degrees in Wollongong and 27 in Albion Park.

However, the afternoon will see the onset of thunderstorms, which will intensify into the evening.

The rain is expected to last through to beginning of next week.

Dangerous surf conditions are also predicted from Sunday, the Bureau of Meteorology has warned.

Illawarra residents enjoyed perfect summer conditions today with the mercury hitting a top of 28.9 degrees in Wollongong and 27.3 in Kiama.

At Belmore Basin, Linda, 7, and Marco Panto, 5, enjoyed the heat while it lasted, cooling off under a bubbler.
