These include the Corrimal area and the southern suburb of Horsley.
Cunningham MP Sharon Bird said the work should be complete in these suburbs by this time next year.
"These projects are really exciting for local families and businesses," Ms Bird said.
"In around 12 months' time, people in Corrimal, Bellambi, Tarrawanna, Russell Vale and Horsley will be able to start connecting to the NBN."
She said maps showing the status of the roll-out were available on the nbnco.com.au website, which shows that work has started or completed to more than 784,000 homes and businesses countrywide.
A standard NBN connection to the home or office was free, Ms Bird said, and NBN retail services were available at similar prices to what people were paying now.
'The NBN is about preparing Australia for the future," Ms Bird said. "It's about ensuring that our local communities are not left behind as the world and our local economy changes.
"From seeing your local doctor from home, to your kids being able to take a specialist class at another school - the NBN will change the way we live, work and access services.
"It will lead to a new wave of innovation, and I'm delighted that people in the Illawarra will be among the first to benefit."
