An unknown man exposed himself to a brother and sister at Warrawong yesterday as the pair walked home from their first day back at primary school, police say.
The nine-year-old boy and eight-year-old girl were on a laneway between Cowper Street and Third Avenue about 3.15pm when the man approached them from behind.
He indecently exposed himself and attempted to engage in conversation, but ran off towards Cowper Street when the girl took out her mobile phone.
The children ran home and told their mother.
Lake Illawarra Police later patrolled the area but were unable to locate the man, desribed as 18-30 years old with a tanned complexion, black hair and medium build.
He wore a black shirt, denim shorts and black sunglasses.
Anyone with information about the incident should call Lake Illawarra Detectives on 4232 5363, or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Details can also be submitted confidentially at www1.police.nsw.gov.au/.
Police have encouraged parents to discuss safety information with their children, including walking straight home, knowing where safe places are, and not talking to strangers.
Police advise children to yell out, ‘‘go away, I don’t know you’’, if they are grabbed by a stranger.
