Trees felled to save Wollongong Town Hall

Wollongong's Kembla Street was closed yesterday while four trees in front of Wollongong Town Hall were brought down.

The 40-year-old plane trees on Kembla Street, between Crown and Burelli streets, were removed because they were causing damage to the building's foundations.

Wollongong City Council said the roots had started cracking the foundations of the heritage-listed building, lifting the pavement and damaging underground services.

The trees will be replaced by four Illawarra flame trees in April after remediation work to remove the tree roots, add tree root barriers and repave has been completed.
