Four clubs vying for bowls championship

Four clubs are chasing the first Illawarra Zone 16 championship of the year, with the fours semi-finals and final at Warilla BC this weekend.

Oak Flats skip Matthew McIntyre takes on Alan Stonham and his Dapto team in one semi-final after both teams won four matches last weekend.

Bulli's Jarred Hamilton will skip his team against Albion Park's Mick Duprez in the other semi-final on Saturday.

McIntyre had a tight 19-16 win over Jeremy Henry in the opening round before winning a last-end thriller 19-18 over Mal Lyons in round two.

The Oak Flats combination were in good touch in a 20-11 win over Mark Walton in round three before a convincing 26-6 win over Eddie Bone in last Sunday's quarter-final.

Stonham had his closest match in round one, beating Andrew Medcalf (Thirroul) 20-19.

The Dapto team were too strong for Graham Richards (Towradgi) in their quarter-final, winning 27-6.

Hamilton booked his semi-final spot with a last-end 20-19 win over Fairy Meadow's Mark Kesby in one of the best matches of the tournament.

Duprez and partners produced a great performance to upset one of the tournament favourites, Shane Garvey, 26-18 in their quarter-final.

Garvey and his Wiseman Park teammates Daniel Ellem and Glenn Taylor won the fours championship last year.

The champions advanced to the quarter-finals with a 29-20 win over Rick Malley's Windang team.

Forty-eight teams nominated for the fours championships with the winners to represent Zone 16 at the state finals later in the year.

The semi-finals on Saturday are from 9am.

The final on Sunday is at 1pm.
