Women face court over genital mutilation

Two Illawarra women charged over the genital mutilation of two young girls are set to return to court in May.

The pair, fronted Parramatta Local Court on Thursday where the magistrate adjourned the matter to May 9 so the defence could reply to the brief of evidence.

A 68-year-old Wollongong woman and a 73-year-old Balgownie woman have been charged with one count each of aiding or procuring female genital mutilation.

A 77-year-old woman and a 39-year-old woman, both from Auburn, have also been charged.

It is alleged the four women attended at least one of the circumcisions, held in Wollongong and Sydney between October 2010 and July 2012.
