Work to begin on Crown Street Mall

As long as the weather co-operates, the refurbishment of Crown Street Mall will start tomorrow with demolition work in the area of the chessboard.

The demolition work on the mall is expected to take about six weeks and also includes removing the amphitheatre and steel arches.

The work will be carried out after hours to minimise disruption to store owners and the public.

There will be no work done on Friday and Saturday nights, and Thursday night demolition work will not start until after late-night shopping finishes.

‘‘During demolition, there will be changes to vehicle and pedestrian access,’’ Wollongong City Council’s Susan Wardle said.

‘‘There will be plenty of signs indicating how you can still move through the mall.’’

Ms Wardle added that the first stage of construction work will start as soon as the demolition work is finished and regular updates would be posted on the council website.
