Shots of alcohol have been banned, patrons will not be able to enter pubs and clubs after 1.30am and there will be no cocktails after midnight in the measures agreed to by the Byron Bay Liquor Accord.

The measures for the town's 71 licensed premises have been announced after it was revealed last month that alcohol-related assaults in Byron had risen 20 per cent since 2009-10, with 260 incidents in the 12 months up to September 2012. The statewide assault rate has fallen over the corresponding period.

It also follows calls by the NSW Police Association to introduce alcohol restrictions after similar measures helped reduced alcohol-related violence in Newcastle.

Byron Liquor Accord chairwoman Hannah Spalding said the trial, which will include a ban on jugs of alcohol being sold and a four-drink limit per person after midnight, was devised in consultation with the NSW Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing.

"These are commonsense measures that we feel will go a long way towards actually addressing the issues,” she said. “We know that most of the incidents are occurring in public places and we know the times, so we have voluntarily agreed to introduce measures aimed at targeting actual problems.”

Other measures to be adopted in the six month trial include:

• No double measures of spirits at any time
• No energy drinks with alcohol after 2am
• No “ready to drink beverage” containing more than 5 per cent alcohol at any time.
• At least one dedicated responsible service of alcohol marshal will be deployed in all venues trading past midnight on Saturdays.

All bottle shops in town will be required to close by 11pm. Those that trade under the Byron Bay Liquor Accord will also trial a ban on cask wine greater than two litres, alcoholic energy drinks and "super-cheap "cleanskin wines.

Stores will also use paper bags that have responsible service of alcohol messages printed on them.

Local police have previously warned that the statistical chance of being assaulted in Byron Bay on a Friday or Saturday night is now greater than anywhere else in NSW.

Police Association president Scott Weber has previously said that when Newcastle introduced similar measures, after-dark assaults dropped by 37 per cent and emergency department admissions fell 26 per cent.

"It's just common sense," he said. "Newcastle was experiencing very similar problems to Byron. Then once a few simple restrictions were introduced, we saw a marked improvement.

The trial will run until September 21.
