Fifteen Rotarians spent two hours spreading mulch, weeding, sweeping and carrying out general maintenance on the eastern side of the popular lookout in a bid to tidy it up for visitors and residents.

Their efforts complement recent work carried out by three newly employed Wollongong City Council trainees tasked with maintaining the site under the guidance of Wollongong Botanic Garden staff.

Rotarian and former Wollongong City Council general manager Rod Oxley said it was the first time the club had been able to carry out proper work at the site since last year.

"We normally have four working bees a year during daylight saving [October to March], however each time we tried to get up there recently it was raining and too dangerous," he said.

"Tuesday evening was the first time over the summer period that we were able to get work done."

Mr Oxley said the site looked much healthier after the group had finished with it.

"A lot of the garden beds were tidier and well mulched and the car park was swept and leaves removed," he said.

"It is an ongoing effort though."

The park had recently been the subject of criticism over what people described as its poor, overgrown condition.

This prompted former real estate agent and charity worker Leigh Stewart to set up a "Save Mt Keira Lookout" Facebook page in early February. It has amassed more than 4600 likes in six weeks.
