Man rescued after car plunges into river

An elderly man has been rescued from the water by a group of men after his car left the road and plunged into the Moruya River on the South Coast.

A Westpac Life Saver helicopter crew was over the incident scene in less than four minutes after witnesses called triple-zero as the rescuing group of men carried the driver slowly to the riverbank.

A local doctor helped the helicopter crew treat the driver for chest pain, lower back pain and other medical conditions.

An ambulance crew then took him to hospital in a stable condition.

A helicopter crewman swam out to the submerged car and confirmed there were no other passengers in the vehicle. AAP
