Woman killed, two injured in Kiama crash

A woman was killed following a crash on the Princes Highway at Kiama on Friday night.

The accident occurred shortly before 6pm in the northbound lanes of the Princes Highway just after the Saddleback Mountain Bridge.

Early reports indicate the Ford Territory lost control in wet conditions and veered into the path of the second vehicle, a Honda C-RV.

The female driver died at the scene.

The ambulance rescue helicopter was called to the scene to airlift a young girl who was travelling in the same car. The girl was reportedly treated for minor injuries.

A 26-year-old man who was reportedly travelling alone in the second vehicle was treated for leg, pelvic and arm injuries and was also to be airlifted to St George Hospital.

The northbound lanes were closed with traffic diversions in place.

Witness Peter Pilt, who is the pastor at the Nowra City Church, was travelling south when he saw the accident scene and was one of the people who stopped to assist remove the child from the car.

‘‘There was heavy rain and lots of thunder and lightning the car was smouldering underneath,’’ he said.

‘‘Eventually the guys managed to get the child out of the back of the vehicle.

‘‘It was a very sad situation.’’
