The woman was "a lovely neighbour", friend Melissa Cruickshank said.
Ms Cruickshank has known her for 3.5 years and said their sons were best mates.
"She's a lovely person, never done anything wrong, she was always quiet, just dropped off her little boy to school and picked him up," she said.
Two police vehicles remain at a Bligh St block of units this morning.
A garage beneath the block has been cordoned off with police tape, a yellow marker bearing the letter A had been placed just outside the open door.
Inside the garage a soccer ball and yellow tonka truck rest against the wall.
A forensic services van arrived at the scene about 9.55am, parking close to the open garage.
Officers set up a camera and started filming inside the garage.
About 2:45pm yesterday police were called to bushland off Foothills Rd in Corrimal, after a member of the public reported finding an abandoned white 2003 Kia Rio.
Officers attempted to make contact with the vehicle's owner, but initially were unable to find her.
Police returned to the vehicle about 7.20pm and searched the vehicle, and found the 41-year-old woman’s body in the boot.
A crime scene was established at the scene where the vehicle was located, and also at a residential address on Bligh Street, Wollongong.
Homicide Squad and Wollongong Local Area Command detectives are investigating the woman's death and have appealed for anyone who saw a white Kia Rio sedan driving erratically in Wollongong's northern suburbs before 2.45pm on Thursday to come forward.
Detectives also have appealed for anyone who saw pedestrians in the Foothills Road area in Corrimal on Thursday afternoon to come forward.
Anyone with information has been urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
