Council environment coordinator Fiona Netting said some early birds were so enthusiastic they arrived by 6am - before any of the 57 sellers were set up - to nab the best deals.
"Cars were just pouring in to set up and I counted hundreds of people who turned up before 9am," she said.
Ms Netting said some of the more interesting items for sale included surfboards, wetsuits and an antique lawnmower.
"People also had art pieces, unusual statues and bronze pieces - so there was really a bit of everything," she said.
"Most sellers said they spoke to hundreds of people and everyone thought the location was great - some of our sellers sold almost everything they had on offer."
She said the car boot sale had helped keep thousands of items out of the Illawarra's landfill and would help residents to be more aware of how they could recycle or re-use any unwanted goods in the future.
