Now, funding from Shellharbour and Wollongong councils and two Illawarra businesses will ensure Life Education and its affable mascot, Healthy Harold the giraffe, continue to educate the region's students to make healthy life choices.
Life Education Illawarra (LEI) acting chairman Michael Aubin said the organisation would receive almost $7000 from Wollongong council, $4500 from Shellharbour council and another $6000 from Harvey Norman Warrawong.
In addition, LEI will receive funding from BHP Billiton for all those children who attend the program at schools within the catchment area of the Dendrobium Mine.
Mr Aubin said the funding would allow education programs to be delivered to primary school children at half price or, in some instances, at no cost to parents or the school.
The program is designed to teach children about the benefits of staying healthy and the harm to their bodies of illicit drugs, alcohol and an unhealthy lifestyle.
