A festival of festivals, an Amazing Race Wollongong and more events like the ideas-a-thon were some of the thousands of suggestions made by the 170 people taking part in the Shaping Wollongong project.
David Laing, chairman of the Illawarra chapter of the Property Council, said the large turnout showed people were looking for - and willing to offer - something different when it came to a vision for Wollongong.
"We dug deep to find a way to capture the creative spirit ... we cast the net wide and we have people here contributing their ideas who may have never shared them before," Mr Laing said.
Over the next week the serious work begins when the ideas are culled down to five.
Those ideas will then be submitted to "an ideas lab" to be analysed by "experts" from various agencies and the community who will try to figure out a way to turn them into reality, although some of the original five ideas may not survive the lab process.
From there, the Shaping Wollongong team led by Melbourne-based creative agency Hello City, will prepare a final report with a "vision and framework" for action "that is true to Wollongong, its character and its people".
