Firefighters were called to the blaze on the corner of Kembla and Smith streets around 1.30am and found three cars engulfed in flames.
Crews in breathing apparatus put out the burning cars. They entered the unit directly above the carpark to ensure it was not affected by the blaze, a spokesperson for Fire and Rescue NSW said.
Residents of the unit block were evacuated and the building’s electricity and water were cut off.
Police allowed residents to return to their apartments to collect essential items, but they have been advised to relocate temporarily as crews attend to the scene, the spokesperson said.
No-one was injured in the blaze.
Police and firefighters are continuing their investigations.
