Richard Young has spent a career making sure people can retire securely, and today receives an Order of Australia Medal.
The Shell Cove man has spent all 81 of his years in the Illawarra, and gave 40 of those years to the Illawarra Retirement Trust.
"The founder of IRT, Dr Max Diment, was a good friend of mine," Mr Young said. "He asked me to join as a director in 1972, I got involved, and found it difficult to move on."
Mr Young chaired the IRT board between 1995 and 2000, during what he said was "a very exciting time".
He was a leading figure in establishing the facility's central kitchen, opening their training college and education program, and expanding the trust to over 30 care centres across NSW, Canberra and Queensland.
"I'm proud to say that we are now a great training centre for aged-care employees, and our meals travel to the ACT and all down the coast," he said.
"It's a great honour to be recognised for something I consider to be a privilege in my life, to help IRT become one of the most progressive and best aged-care organisations in Australia."
