But that was before Prime Minister Julia Gillard claimed an Abbott government posed the threat of being governed by an endless series of men in blue ties.
‘‘A prime minister - a man in a blue tie - who goes on holidays to be replaced by a man in a blue tie. A treasurer, who delivers a budget wearing a blue tie, to be supported by a finance minister - another man in a blue tie,’’ Ms Gillard told a campaign meeting on Tuesday.
‘‘Women once again banished from the centre of Australia’s political life.’’
Mr Abbott was in Wollongong on Wednesday night for a Liberal Party fundraiser and sported - perhaps inevitably - a blue tie.
He was also wearing a blue tie on the Gold Coast earlier in the day.
Tonight at the dinner at City Beach Function Centre, the Opposition Leader declined to elaborate on his choice of tie for the evening, offering a quick ‘‘G’day, how are you?’’ before disappearing inside.
The media was not invited to the private function.
