Aerosol artists were working on a project on a fence in Third Avenue yesterday and talking to community members about how they developed and created the artwork.
The program is run by the Port Kembla Youth Project to tackle the local graffiti problems, redirecting teens' skills into legitimate art pieces on laneway fences.
Art mentor Simon Grant helped the budding artists plan, create and install the murals, and taught them about laws on public art.
The program was a response to illegal graffiti, which costs Wollongong City Council $200,000 each year to clean up.
The laneways in Port Kembla are a particular target for illegal graffiti, and residents and young people have partnered with the Port Kembla Youth Project to find a creative solution.
