Shellharbour City Council is urging residents to be on guard when approached by people claiming to have council permission to paint street numbers on the kerbside.
‘‘These unscrupulous people are operating illegally and pressuring people into having their house numbers painted on kerbs,’’ Shellharbour City mayor Marianne Saliba said.
‘‘For any work on a public road a person must have the necessary approvals, traffic control and insurance.
‘‘These people do not have council approval and they are operating in an unsafe and unethical manner and should be stopped.’’
The council is urging anyone who is contacted by these people to phone the council’s customer-service unit on 42216111 and ask for a ranger, or call the department of Fair Trading on 133220.
