Second-placed Albion Park brought University's undefeated season crashing down in a gripping round 20 of the Illawarra Men's first grade.
A double to Brady Anderson and Jack Hayes helped sling-shot the Park to a 6-2 win to taint the Students' previously unblemished record in 2013.
The result will give Park a huge boost heading into the final round of the season, with a major semi-final clash against University on the horizon.
Uni's Heath Ogilvie said it was a wake up call for his squad leading into the finals.
"They were on their game. It's the best I have seen them play in a while," Ogilvie said.
"They are the most consistent compared to other teams, so I think Albion Park are the team for us to beat.
The Students may have their top-four spot wrapped up, but they still have a role to play in the final round of the season.
A match-up with fifth-placed Fairy Meadow will determine the remaining member of the top four.
The Falcons defeated a hapless Dapto outfit 10-0 last weekend to keep their post season dreams alive, but face a much tougher essay against the Students.
"We have had the same sort of thing with Fairy Meadow and Robertson for the past few years," Ogilvie said.
"They played us in the last round or two and it determines whether or not they make the finals.
"It will be a good challenge leading into the finals because they are going to be playing 100 per cent, so they won't be slacking off."
Elsewhere in the league, Wests take on Albion Park while Mittagong and Dapto round out their seasons in a dead-rubber fixture.
Robertson have the bye and will wait anxiously on the result of the other final round fixtures.
In women's hockey, Albion Park are given the chance to rest up before a deep finals run as they enjoy the weekend off.
University have second spot locked down but will be aiming to bring good form into the post-season.
After defeating Fairy Meadow 2-1 last round, they have a clash with Railways Greys.
Avondale, Gerringong and Jamberoo fight it out for the final two semi-final spots.
Jamberoo will play Fairy Meadow, Gerringong will travel to Figtree and Avondale host West Illawarra in a scintillating final round of fixtures.
