The drumming groups from Figtree Heights Public School, Shell Cove Public School and Pambula Public School will provide the music for vocalists singing a gospel-style version of George Michael's song Freedom.
Music teacher Greg Costello said students enjoyed learning African drumming because they didn't have to worry about reading music - all they needed was a sense of rhythm and the ability to count to four.
While newcomers to the drums could be tentative, he said students put their whole body into creating the beats once they got the hang of it.
"It's loud, noisy, pretty full-on when they're all getting into it. Once they've nailed the rhythms, they hit the drums pretty hard."
Southern Stars EXTRA! is on at WIN Entertainment Centre on August 30 and 31. Tickets are on sale through Ticketek.
