The Appin mines rescue teams showed off their skills at the 54th Southern Mines Rescue Competition last Friday, with Appin Pink taking first place and Appin Blue earning runner-up.
The annual competition was held at Illawarra Coal's Appin Mine.
It tested rescue teams from the Illawarra on their ability to perform both underground and surface emergency rescues and make facilities safe.
The miners also had to demonstrate their first-aid skills, firefighting ability and knowledge of theory.
Eight teams from the region competed in the competition, including teams from Dendrobium, West Cliff, Gujarat NRE, Metropolitan and Tahmoor.
Competitions are run throughout NSW to allow teams to improve their skills and ensure competency in real emergencies.
