A blanket ban on the use of Shellharbour City's sports fields in wet weather has long been a source of frustration for sporting groups.
However a draft Shellharbour City Council policy that goes on exhibition on Thursday could see many of the city's 34 sports grounds remain open during rainy weather.
"This policy is about providing our sports people with more options and meeting the needs of our community," Shellharbour Mayor Marianne Saliba said.
Cr Saliba said a council assessment of grounds had identified that the surface of some fields could sustain being used in wet weather.
In the draft wet weather policy, sports fields are placed in three categories, ranging from the worst affected by rain (category 1), to the least affected (category 3).
During wet weather, clubs would be advised by the council which categories of fields remained open to training and competition.
Any club using a field assessed as a category 2 or category 3 field would have the option to apply to the council to pay a bond and play during wet weather.
If damage did occur this would be covered by the bond, which meant there would be no extra cost to the broader community to remediate a ground, Cr Saliba said.
Shellharbour Sports Assistance Fund chairman Don Briggs warned the policy meant the bond that clubs would pay to cover potential ground damage would double from $500 to $1000.
He argued that council's focus should be on raising the standard of the seven grounds classified as worst affected by rain.
The council's director of corporate policy Lee Furness said the bond increase had been proposed by clubs who often shared grounds with other sporting codes.
The draft policy will be on public exhibition from August 29 until September 26 and if adopted will be trialled for 12 months.
