The "It's ON! in the Gong" marketing campaign has been named the region's best tourism-promotion effort, at the South Coast Tourism Awards.
Destination Wollongong's campaign to draw attention to the many events in Wollongong last summer picked up the award in the marketing and promotions category, at the ceremony at the Shellharbour Club on Wednesday night.
Several other Illawarra tourism operators won awards, and the Sebel Harbourside at Kiama claimed top spot in both the executive accommodation and tourism restaurant categories.
It's ON! aimed to attract visitors to the region via the 18 sporting and cultural events held between December and March, describing the season as "Wollongong's Summer of Fun".
Ads were placed in western Sydney and Canberra and as part of the campaign, a Dion's bus was covered with campaign images for its suburban Wollongong runs.
Destination Wollongong general manager Mark Sleigh said he was thrilled for the team that worked on the marketing campaign.
"It is through their hard work that we could support the action-packed program of events over the summer period, which injected $22 million into the local economy," he said.
In June, Destination Wollongong released visitor numbers showing that 3.6 million domestic day trippers had visited the Illawarra in the 12 months to March - up 10 per cent on the previous year.
Also, Destination Wollongong - formerly known as Tourism Wollongong - was inducted into the South Coast Tourism Awards Hall of Fame.
