A man and woman have been charged with stealing nearly 500 brass flower vases from memorial gardens at a Unanderra crematorium.
The Wollongong City Memorial Gardens and Crematorium was targeted early on Thursday morning, with thieves removing small flower vases attached to memorial plaques
Police claim the vases were stolen from the Berkeley Road facility between 6pm on Wednesday and 5.30am on Thursday.
A total of 496 vases were allegedly stolen from three separate memorial walls, including 190 from an area specifically for ex-servicemen and women.
The vases were attached to brass name plates that cover interred ashes.
It will be alleged more than 50 name plates were damaged during the theft.
Police arrested a 45-year-old Woonona man and a 40-year-old Unanderra woman about 8.30am yesterday.
They were both taken to Lake Illawarra Police station, where the man was charged with larceny, receiving stolen property and two counts of possessing a prohibited drug.
He was refused bail to appear in Wollongong Local Court this morning.
The woman was charged with larceny and granted conditional bail to appear in court on October 1.
