Member for Cunningham Sharon Bird cast her vote at her local polling booth at Mt St Thomas Public School just after midday.
Her fourth federal election Ms Bird had been up at the crack of dawn putting up election posters around booths as candidates jostled for the best position.
‘‘You always want to get an advantage at the gates,’’ she said. ‘‘You want to get the best spot.’’
Ms Bird said she was always anxious on election day.
‘‘The nerves kick in,’’ she said. ‘‘Cunningham is described as a safe seat but I’m very dubious about that myself. I mean we’ve lost a seat in the past. I don’t take anything for granted. I think for us the minute you behave like that people know it and they respond accordingly. So I’ll be out working for every vote.
However she acknowledged that it would be a difficult job for Labor nationally.
‘‘It’s a tough call across the nation,’’ she said. ‘‘I know that all of my colleagues are working hard in their seats for every vote they can get today.’’
This evening Ms Bird will host a party at Bellambi Surf Club to thank the volunteers who had manned the booths for her all day and to watch the results come in.
