Customers in the Olive Café in the Main Arcade Nowra were given a shock this morning when a car crashed into a brick wall outside their window.
At about 7.55am an 89-year-old Cambewarra man reversing a Holden Commodore out of the Berry Street Seed and Produce store backed into a wall.
The vehicle then surged forward performing a large arc, east along Egans Lane, narrowly missing Grants Seafood before ploughing into the brick wall on the opposite side of the road, damaging a roller door.
The man was taken to Shoalhaven District Hospital by ambulance suffering minor chest injuries and cuts.
Olive Café employee Laura Hsu said she heard a noise outside and thought it was most probably just “hoons” and then the car crashed into the brick wall.
“The whole arcade filled with smoke it was incredible,” she said.
“It was so thick, we had to get out through the Junction Street end of the arcade.
“A gentleman came over from the car park and helped the man in the car.”
She said it was lucky the accident happened early in the morning as later in the day there is often people walking through the arcade.
“Luckily our boss was running a bit late today, she usually arrives around the time of the accident and walks up through here carrying bags so it could have been a lot worse,” she said.
Police are investigating the accident.
