This year’s Kiama Showgirl Kathryn Cullen says the experience has improved her confidence and she wants more young women to have the same opportunity.
Entries are now open for the 2014 Kiama Showgirl Competition, the first stage of The Land Sydney Royal Showgirl Competition.
Miss Cullen spoke fondly of her experience, saying she came out of the competition with three new friends in her fellow entrants.
‘‘It’s not a beauty contest, it’s about getting involved in your community and it’s lots of fun,’’ she said.
‘‘Going into the competition, I knew I had the passion for agriculture, but my public speaking skills were enhanced, also my confidence and my self-development.’’
The 21-year-old’s newfound confidence has served her well at university, where she recently had to pitch her idea for her art major project – a room full of chocolate lace.
‘‘We turn to chocolate when we’re stressed and there’s that comfort, so I’m creating an environment totally in that,’’ she said.
‘‘I gave everyone some chocolate to eat and because it’s quite out of the normal, they were quite positive about it.’’
Miss Cullen represented the Kiama Show Society at the zone final in February and recently at the South Coast Tourism Awards, where the society was nominated in the event or festival category.
Held in Kiama since 1963, the competition is an integral part of Kiama Show, showcasing young women who have a passion for the Kiama district.
Entrants will visit farms in the area to learn about Kiama’s industries, play a special role at the Kiama Show Ball on January 10 and sash prizewinners at the show on January 24-25.
Prizes include beauty and fitness vouchers and a trip to Sydney.
Judging is based on The Land Sydney Royal Showgirl Competition criteria including personality, confidence, ambition and life goals, general knowledge, rural knowledge, presentation and speech.
Entrants must be aged 18-25 as of May 1 next year.
Due to an early development day this year, entries are encouraged by October 23.
