Brian Petschler will serve as Kiama’s mayor for another 12 months after being re-elected unopposed.
However, Kiama has a new deputy mayor after veteran councillor Warren Steel decided against renominating for the position.
Neil Reilly, who will replace Cr Steel as deputy, won with six votes, ahead of Cr Andrew Sloan on two votes and Mark Way on one vote.
Cr Steel has come under fire in recent weeks for the way he reluctantly delivered an ‘‘acknowledgement to country’’ address at the recent Kiama Lifestyle, Business and Wedding Expo, while standing in for Cr Petschler.
Cr Petschler served as Kiama Municipal Council’s general manager between 1987 and 2001, then stood successfully for council in 2008 and was elected deputy mayor in 2011 after Greens councillor Ben van der Wijngaart relocated to New Zealand.
At the Kiama council elections last September, Cr Petschler’s team recorded 28.9 per cent of first-preference votes.
