Now the post-mortem is almost complete, we need to think about ways of preventing another seventh-tackle try catastrophe after last week's Sharks-Cowboys final.
I've thought of two ways that might help.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but the first is for the video referees to monitor the tackle count in an official capacity.
Give them a counter similar to one used by umpires in cricket. It should tick over with each tackle.
When you get to the last play, they simply communicate to the on-field officials that it's the last tackle to confirm their count is right.
In a scenario similar to last week, they may be able to correct it.
They're already able to communicate with the men in the middle so this would be an easy extension. Simple enough?
The second is for there to be some sort of formal recognition of the tackle count on the big screen, easily visible by all. I think some grounds have them, but not always easy to see.
As viewers at home, we see the tackle count and metres gained in each set. Why can't we have this shown more prominently at the venue?
We have two referees these days with the addition of the pocket official, which means at all times we have at least one referee having a scoreboard at either end of the ground in their line of sight.
I know it was an absolutely elementary error by Matt Cecchin and Henry Perenara last week, but we have to think of ways of ensuring it NEVER happens again.
These two subtle changes might be a start.
Now to Johnathan Thurston's outburst at Townsville Airport at the weekend.
Hello, Johnathan, you play half your games in Sydney! You can't be going around saying you hate the joint.
I still can't comprehend how the NRL didn't fine him for those now infamous conspiracy theory comments.
He had every right to be filthy. I'd be filthy too. Of course, you're going to be frustrated and, of course, you're going to say stuff you don't mean when you sit down and think about it.
But who let him talk in the first place? Where's management who should have told him to keep quiet after landing?
There's one person who should feel really aggrieved in this whole process - Geoff Toovey. How does he get fined for his outburst a few weeks ago and Thurston doesn't?
If Toovey hasn't paid his fine yet, I would refuse to cough up the $10,000 after there was no action taken against Thurston.
