On Saturday morning police said they were not treating the death of the man, believed to be aged in his 60s, as suspicious.
Police and paramedics were called to Roy Johanson Park, off Uralba Street, after a Wollongong City Council caretaker made the discovery about 12.15pm on Friday.
Police said paramedics estimated the body had been lying on an embankment leading to a creek for at least six hours before it was found.
The section of Roy Johanson Park was blocked off for most of the afternoon and children from a nearby school were forced to detour around the scene on their way home.
