The Illawarra has a new vineyard restaurant, function and reception centre called Broughton on the Ridge, just north of Shoalhaven Heads on Coolangatta Road.
The new eatery is large enough for wedding receptions of up to 100 people and overlooks the vines at Mountain Ridge Wines at Coolangatta.
The new purpose-built facility is the realisation of a dream for Monique and Barry Starkey, who have been running a popular cellar door on the property since 2008.
"We planted the first vines in 2007," Mrs Starkey said.
"We moved down from Sydney about 12 years ago. We have five sons and we wanted to give them a good life."
They originally bought another property closer to Berry but decided it was not big enough.
When they acquired the present property in 2006 they soon realised its potential as a vineyard and Mountain Ridge Wines was born.
Mrs Starkey said they decided to build a restaurant and function centre when they saw the demand.
"We are targeting locals and tourists," she said.
"We get a lot of people passing through here and locals are always looking for somewhere a little bit different and new to go to. I think everyone gets excited when there is a new restaurant opening. And the plan is to offer an affordable wedding venue. We can offer the whole package. You can get married here and have your reception here.
"We have done about 25 weddings up near the cellar door already. There was a demand for it so we thought we needed to build a venue.
"We also brew two beers of our own here as well and we have them on tap. We have the Broughton Pale Ale and the Bolong Black."
By opening the glass doors on to a covered area overlooking the vineyard they can cater for more than 100 people.
The restaurant is open on Fridays and Saturdays for lunch and dinner and lunchtime on Sundays.
"It is fine dining in the evening and a little more laid back during the day," Mrs Starkey said.
She has even thought about picnic rugs so visitors to the vineyard can order lunch and eat it on the grass among the vines.
