It was a welcome change for the family who battled windy conditions at the same event last year, and non-stop showers the previous year when they took part for the first time.

Siblings Lisa Ware, Steven Kearns and Sandra Barratt, along with their partners and children, joined the event to remember the family members they have lost.

‘‘Over the last few years we’ve lost a few family members to cancer and last year my sister-in-law and brother-in-law were both diagnosed with cancer,’’ Mrs Ware said.

‘‘Sadly my brother-in-law died at Christmas-time while my sister-in-law is in remission. It’s been a horrific year, and it has given this year’s Relay that much more meaning.’’

Mrs Barratt and husband Mark said the atmosphere at the event at Beaton Park on the weekend was amazing.

‘‘It’s for such a great cause and the fact that you can help cancer survivors celebrate is such a fantastic thing,’’ Mr Barratt said.

‘‘The feeling here is just tremendous - you get such a lift from the people around you - that’s what makes it so special.

‘‘It’s a chance to remember those who are gone, and also to celebrate that life goes on.’’
