Mal Lyons won his second Illawarra Zone 16 championship for 2013 after his Towradgi Park team claimed the Champion of Club Champion Fours title last Sunday.
Lyons, who is off to next month's State Finals at East Maitland BC after winning the Illawarra Triples with Rod Busst and Dave Wakeling, teamed with Paul Luke (lead), Steven Blackney (second) and skip Ray Parkes to beat Bulli 24-21 in an exciting champion fours final.
The tournament featured 15 Illawarra Major Fours champions with Towradgi and Bulli winning three matches at Dapto Citizens BC to book a spot in the final.
The Bulli team of skip Jared Hamilton and partners Bernie Harding (lead), Mark Corbett (second) and Jared's father Warren Hamilton (third) began with a 31-9 win over Scarborough/Wombarra.
Bulli then beat Corrimal's Paul Sweeney in a final-end thriller 19-18 and booked a spot in the final with another tight 19-17 win over the Albion Park fours champions skipped by Chris McLay.
Towradgi began their run to the title with a tense 24-23 win over Warilla champions skipped by Dallas Delatorre.
Towradgi then had a 23-18 round two win over Mark Larsen's Windang team with Towradgi then too strong for Zoran Bosev's Dapto Citizens team, winning 22-13.
While the Champion of Champion Four title does not carry qualification for a state title, the Zone crown is still significant against the champion fours teams from around the Illawarra.
The final Zone 16 championships of the season are the Champion of Club Champion Minor Pairs on the weekend of October 12-13 and Champion of Club Champion Minor Singles the following weekend.
