An 82-year-old man was taken to Wollongong Hospital on Tuesday afternoon after he was struck by a bus on the corner of Crown and Keira streets.
Bus passenger Andy Zhu said people around him were ‘‘freaking out’’ following the collision.
‘‘Some people said, ‘Oh my gosh’ – they couldn’t believe what they saw,’’ Mr Zhu said.
The incident happened around 3.45pm and caused traffic chaos with the Gong Shuttle bus stationed in the middle of the intersection, which forms the top of busy Crown Street Mall.
Mr Zhu said he saw the elderly man attempt to cross the road.
‘‘Maybe it was too late to brake,’’ he said.
‘‘I think [the bus driver] was in shock.’’
Bystanders helped hold white sheets to shield the injured man as he was placed on a stretcher.
A NSW Ambulance spokeswoman said the man was treated for head, chest and limb injuries before being taken to Wollongong Hospital. He is in a critical condition.
The 45-year-old female bus driver was not injured.
Police would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident and who has not yet spoken to police.
Anyone with information should call Wollongong Police via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
