The weeks of cramming will finally pay off for year 12 students across the state today as they sit their first HSC exam.
English is the first cab off the rank, and is the only compulsory subject. Students sit their first English paper this morning and their second tomorrow afternoon.
Design and Technology students will have an extra-large workload tonight, with their written exam scheduled for tomorrow morning.
As their three-week study break came to an end last week, students at the Illawarra Grammar School headed to the airconditioned library for final study sessions with friends.
Though there were a few jitters, the pressure was off for some, having already found out they did well in their drama, dance and music practical exams earlier in the year.
Grace Crisp said it was good to know she had already aced one subject. She and friend Laura Stutchbury went to school last week for some last-minute advice from teachers.
Laura said she preferred studying in a group because you could bounce around ideas and ease each other’s concerns.
‘‘You have access to their knowledge and can encourage each other to keep going.’’
They agreed exercise was the best way to manage nervousness, with running and swimming as their go-to stress relievers.
In the Illawarra and South Coast, 7229 students will sit for their HSC, joining 75,168 students in NSW.
Aside from English, general mathematics, mathematics, biology and business studies are the most popular subjects.
Arabic Beginners, Heritage Indonesian, Dutch Continuers, Maltese Continuers and Ukrainian Continuers are the least sought-after, with only three students sitting each exam.
