Lake Illawarra junior Caitlin Foord’s race against time to be fit for the new W-League season has been given added incentive, with the Sky Blues set to travel to Japan for the International Women’s Club Championships on November 30.
In the tournament, Sydney take on the best club sides from throughout Asia, South America and Europe in a knockout-style competition to determine which side is No 1 in world club football. “We want to perform at our best,” said Sydney FC W-League head coach Alen Stajcic.
“A lot of our players have played international football and played for Australia at various levels... and this is just another example of that.
“We’ll be playing against the best teams in the world and you just can’t get a better experience than that.
‘‘Hopefully we can show them that we are up to matching them.”
Before the Sky Blues head to the tournament in Japan, they will kick off their W-League campaign against Melbourne Victory on November 10.
Foord has been out for more than three months with a foot injury that forced her to miss the Matildas’ international with the United States on Sunday, but she hopes to make her return in time for the new campaign.
