Warrawong will come alive with the sights, sounds and scents of Latin America this weekend, with the first annual Illawarra Spanish Latin American Film Festival opening tonight.
Five films from across South and Central America – Chile, Uruguay, Venezuela and Costa Rica – will be screened at the Gala Cinema this weekend, with a variety of Latin cultural activities in adjoining Mowbray Lane.
Organiser Bertha Quiros from the Spanish and Latin American Community Organisation, said the event aimed to celebrate the Illawarra’s burgeoning Spanish-language community.
“There is a big Latin community in Wollongong, and in Shellharbour it is the No1 ethnic group,” she said.
While all films were made with Spanish-speaking audiences in mind, Ms Quiros said films were chosen that would resonate with those who were not part of the Latin community.
The screenings will have English subtitles, and all members of the community are encouraged to take part in the festivities, which will include Latin dancing, music, art and food in Mowbray Lane.
A giant paella is being prepared, and churros, pastries and other Latin dishes will be on offer from noon tomorrow.
Tickets are available online from Event Brite, or at the Gala.
